#7 I’m already too old.
I will never be able to start now, I’m too old. What can I accomplish in my remaining time?
There is a great piece in Bruce Mau’s Life style ‘A Woman of a certain age’ (page 460) in which he describes his 15 year theory, that every 15 years there is a new career window, the opportunity to change careers, find your voice, change directions.
‘…all you’ve done so far may only be in preparation for what you will do. The open road lies ahead’.
Bruce Mau was 35 when he wrote that, arguably his finest moment. Andy Warhol had his first exhibition at 34, Rem Koolhaas first gained recognition around 36. At 35 John Baldessari destroys all his previous work and starts anew.
I am 39. Close enough. It’s not happened yet but nowhere near too old..
Frank Gehry began producing work under his own name only found his voice after his 50th.
