(...) I'm philosophically opposed to suicide; borrowing from Arthur Schopenhauer, the great German Romantic pessimist, I think that to be born entails an obligation to endure the pain life has to offer, because it's really through this pain that we learn and grow and love and create, which together are really the best things life has to offer, even if these sorts of blessings come in very fleeting doses. You'll note that this philosophy is divorced from any expectation that things will "get better," because all too often (and as much as I appreciate the sentiment and can only hope that it prevents people -- and especially kids -- from killing themselves) things don't actually get better.
Matthew Gallaway, The Suicide Impulse, February 2012.
