Someone emailed me this picture because he thought it would fit this blog. Thanks for thinking of that. But I don’t like it.
These are completely separate; Art has nothing to do with volunteering at a soup kitchen. By all means, volunteer at a soup kitchen! It’s a great thing to do and will make the world a better place for a lot of people! But why give up art? Because it’s pretentious? That’s small-minded thinking.
Years ago when I studied in art school we had an assignment to draw a picture using only lines. That is so open I felt free to do whatever I wanted and I thought hard how I could make a profound statement with my drawing. I ended up writing ‘Don’t look at art, the world is dying”. My professor said he thought it was witty. Then he said; “if the world really is dying, we maybe should take a good look at art.” I remember I was perplexed, but ultimately had to agree.
— On second thought it seems Art and soup kitchens can be related .
— I’m curious; why is there DUBLIN CONTEMPORARY 2011 underneath? Is this a reaction to the fair, or a piece by an artist participating? Or is someone so preoccupied and frustrated with the (dublin) art world that he needs to vent it by calling it pretentious and feeling morally superior?
